“I think when we iianmge a small child doing these things, we think, “Oh, these are just kids.” But when mocking someone of another race goes unchecked, I think our entire society needs to be held responsible.”Nice piece but actually I hold ALL bullies responsible for their actions. All bullying is wrong be it white bullying or whites being bullied;Gays or lesbians bullying or Gays or lesbians being bullied; Blacks bullying or Blacks being bullied; Asians bullying or Asians being bullied; Mixed race people bullying or Mixed race being bullied. All races and sexualities do it online and in schools from K to doctorate programmes. While appreciate the research that the author did, I don’t believe the above stats as applied to the general populace. I was bullied brutally by an Chinese-American girl at her slumber party growing up and often by Korean and Chinese girls at school. I was eight years old and she literally declared to all my classmates “let’s make fun of Sophie”. I am mixed, that was not cool (Asian-American still has huge issues with deferring to white supremacy) and this was the 70s. I was traumatized for months. The next year when she had her non-slumber party (we stayed friends because I wanted to fit in, had low self worth and she was popular) and she started in on me almost as soon as I walked in the door. Mercifully, her mother quickly pulled her into another room and nipped it in the bud. Yes, Asians bully as much as any other race and there are plenty of Asian gangs in the US and in the EU to go with the Latino, Black and Russian gangs. Sure, I could de construct and say “oh her family was over achieving, her older sister HAD to get into Stanford or else, they lived in the area of town not as exclusive” but then she also came from two parent family with loads of enviable traditions she proudly shared each year at Chinese New Years. I too was dealing with a heavy load with society as well and frankly have no empathy to this day. A bully is a bully and there simply is no “esp. when you target an individual based on race/ethnicity/sexuality/gender” disclaimer. A ten year old white girl just hung herself having none of the aforementioned reasons and she deserves our sympathy just as much as the two young trans boys who killed themselves over bullying do.ALL bullying is ALL wrong always.

Thank you, Cedric. I'm having a trying time. Attempting a balance is not easy. Communication is important... but even that can be a struggle in itself. The key is not giving up!

I read the poem Ode to a teenager and found it touching. It describes my ex-wifes relationship with my daughter. it is so strained and i have tried to help make it better. My ex tries but to no avail. I belive my daughter is just biding her time till she goes to college. I just wonder if they will become more distant. thanks Suzee.

Resignation it seems so final as if in death. there is a lot more living to do despite the frustrations and dissapointments. Being scared and lonely is understandable but may be due to enviornment. Change is the big hurdle and the ability to venture out. I do like the poem but i challenge it's final conclusion. Thanks for sharing.
